Make The Comparison - Vacation Rentals Make Sense

Why stay in a crowded motel room, when you can enjoy the luxury of a beach condo or home?

by Suzanne M. Perez

Summer vacation at the beach—but where to stay? Hotel, motel or vacation rental? “Too many people assume a hotel or motel will be the best value, but that’s usually not the case,” says Amanda Caperino, San Diego Sunset Vacation Rental manager and life-long San Diego resident. “There are so many great choices among vacation rentals, with so many amenities,” she explains. “You just get so much more for your money.”

For example, a San Diego Sunset vacation rental will have a full kitchen, which saves on the meal budget. Free bicycle, boogie board and horseshoe rentals save on the recreation budget. Free full gym and business center provide a chance to keep in shape while on vacation, and to keep in touch without spending the extra bucks.

You can find one beach house or condo to accommodate your whole group, whether it’s a family, or a wedding party,” explains Caperino. “We have vacation properties that can easily sleep up to 14 people. Instead of paying the cost to provide rooms for a wedding party, for instance, in several hotel rooms, save money and enjoy the stay more in a large house or condo.”

For example, Pacific View, with its three bedrooms and three baths, sleeps 10 in 1,400 square feet of luxury living. By contrast, if you choose a chain hotel in Mission Beach you would need three of their 200-square-foot rooms to provide beds for that number of people. The cost comparison for a week during peak season: $6,571 for the chain hotel, compared to $4,000 for Pacific View. “Right off the bat you save more than $2,500,” Caperino points out. Factor in the other savings and you could afford two weeks of vacation for the price of one at the hotel.

Pacific View has ocean views equal to or superior to the partial view you might get from your hotel room. Because it is one house away from the Ocean Walk, it has the advantage of being steps from the beach, but buffered from the Ocean Walk activities, Caperino points out.

You can take your breaks from the beach for meals in the modern kitchen that includes not just a microwave and mini-fridge that come standard in hotel rooms. “The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, stove, oven, microwave and full size refrigerator,” she says. “A built-in gas barbecue on the private patio provides a great cooking alternative you won’t find in any hotel.”

Instead of sitting on beds to watch TV or sharing the two chairs at a small table, you will have a full dinner area that seats six, plus a breakfast bar that seats two, and the patio for outdoor eating.

The spacious living room includes a fireplace, television, DVD player and CD player. “You really have it all in a vacation rental,” she says.

At the hotel, you will need to spend your cash to wash clothes during your stay, but Pacific View has a full size washer and dryer that won’t cost you anything to use.

Anyone who stays at a San Diego Sunset vacation rental has free unlimited access to the Powerhouse Gym,” Caperino says. “It is within walking distance of most of our residences.”

A lot of people have discovered the secret of vacation rentals and it is important to make reservations early, warns Caperino. “During the peak season, it can be tough to find accommodations anywhere in Mission Beach. Just go to www.SanDiegoSunset.com to easily make reservations online, or call the office seven days a week at 888-SUNNY-SD (888-786-6973).”
